Description

YouTube Content ID is a popular fingerprinting system that content creators can use to easily identify and manage their copyrighted content on YouTube. Videos uploaded to YouTube are compared with audio and video files registered with Content ID by content owners, looking for matches.

When a video's audio matches content registered with Content ID, a copyright notice will appear on the video and the content owner may choose to take certain actions, such as:

  • Clearing the claim and taking no further action.
  • Track the video's viewership statistics
  • Monetizing the video by serving ads on the video
  • Muting audio that matches your music or even blocking an entire video from being viewed

As a YouTube partner platform, we use the audio portion of the Content ID system to manage and administer copyrighted audio content on behalf of content owners. When you submit your audio to YouTube Audio Content ID, your audio is compared to videos containing the same audio. We automatically monetize those videos and add the revenue generated to your distribution account.

*Important: Do not confuse YouTube Content ID with YouTube Music.

Service Type

YouTube Content ID is not a public music service, but an invisible tracking system. We create a reference (fingerprint) that allows Youtube to claim all videos that contain your audio. You can only activate YouTube Music Content ID if you are the rightful owner of the copyright.

Time to publish

It takes 2-5 business days for Content ID to start generating claims.

Payment rate

When a video containing your music is played on YouTube, you are paid a pro-rata share of YouTube's advertising and subscription revenue for that video per month, calculated according to the terms set out in our agreement with YouTube. Payments will fluctuate each month, depending on the amount of advertising or subscription revenue generated and the frequency with which your music was played.
